Does egg float?

What we wonder:
Does egg float?

What we need:
Salt
Water
Eggs

What we do?

 1. Label two glasses with masking taped with 'Water' and 'Water + Salt'.

 2. Pour plain water into the glasses.

 3. Add three tablespoonfuls of salt to the 'Water + Salt' glass.

 4. Stir until the salt dissolves.

 5. Add extra fun by letting the experimenter tastes the salty water.

6. Stir well.

 7. Slowly put the egg into the 'Water' glass.

8. Now put the egg into the 'Water + Salt' glass. (Be ever ready with the camera to capture their respond to the magic of science!)

Result:
Yes, the eggs float in salty water.

 What actually happened?
An egg doesn't float in plain water but since salt water is more dense than plain water, it has a better chance of floating in the salt water.  The greater buoyant force allows the egg to float in the salt water, if salty enough.

 The magic of science.

What if I add more salt, Mummy?

The girls having extra fun with the experiment. Iesha was so curious she put all the salt in the house into the water.

Initially Iris asked her father why did the man float in the Dead Sea.  She was reading "What's Planet Earth?" with him.  Then he explained that the water is full of salt, that the density of the Dead Sea is so high, and that makes the man floats. To visualize this, he did this experiment.  And much to Iris's surprise, the egg does float in the salt water.  After the experiment, Bapak screamed "She!!!! Iris dah tuang habis garam dalam kolam dia.  Dia kata dia nak tengok dia tenggelam ke tak?"

Well, well done Iris.  You did what real scientist did: a real life application.
