Flower Drinks Water

What we wonder?
How flowers drink water?

What we need?
1. Flower
2. Food colorings
3. Cups
4. Scissors


What we need to do?
1. Buy flowers.






2. Pour water into the cups.


3. Add food coloring into each cup.


4. Cut the flowers's stems.


5. Put the flowers into each cup.


6. Observe for two days.

What's going on?
The process the flowers drink the water is called 'transpiration'.  The flower draws water from the cup through its stem. The flower draws water through little tubes or vein-structures called 'xylem'.  In this experiment, the flower draws colored water through xylem, and this dyes the petals.
